Intent for DT

At Newtown Primary School, Design and Technology inspires children to be creative, practical, and reflective learners.  Through engaging, hands-on experiences, pupils develop mastery in practical skills such as food preparation, textiles, and mechanical systems.  They learn to design with purpose, make with care, and evaluate and improve their work thoughtfully.  Drawing inspiration from designers, inventors, and products from throughout history, children are encouraged to solve real-world problems, take risks, and develop resilience, creativity, and technical understanding for life beyond the classroom.

Design and Technology Implementation

At Newtown, Design and Technology is taught through a carefully planned and progressive curriculum that ensures all pupils develop secure knowledge and skills in textiles, construction, and food technology throughout EYFS, KS1, and KS2.  Each year group engages in all three strands annually, allowing children to revisit and build upon key skills as they move through the school.

Lessons follow the design process of researching, designing, making, and evaluating, enabling pupils to develop practical skills alongside critical thinking and problem-solving.  Children are given opportunities to explore tools, materials, and techniques safely and confidently, with increasing independence and technical challenges as they progress.
