RE

Intent for RE

At Newtown Primary School, our vision for Religious Education (RE) is rooted in our core values; nurturing successful learners, fostering responsible citizens and developing resilient individuals.  We believe that RE plays a pivotal role in shaping pupils not only academically but also morally, socially and spiritually, preparing them to engage thoughtfully and respectfully with the world around them.

Our intent is to provide a rich, inclusive and inspiring RE curriculum that empowers pupils to explore, question and reflect on a wide range of beliefs, religions and worldviews, including non-religious perspectives.  Through this exploration, children will develop a deep understanding of the diversity around them while being encouraged to consider their own values, beliefs and sense of spirituality.

Central to our RE vision is the promotion of British Values; democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.  In a world that is increasingly diverse, we aim to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be compassionate, respectful and thoughtful members of society.  Tolerance is at the heart of our approach.  We want children to see the value in listening, understanding and appreciating perspectives different from their own and to approach differences with empathy rather than judgement.

We are committed to providing our pupils with authentic, first-hand experiences that bring learning to life.  Children at Newtown will have opportunities to visit places of worship, meet and speak with people from a variety of religious and non-religious backgrounds and participate in meaningful, dialogue-rich activities that foster reflection and understanding.  By engaging directly with communities, pupils will develop both knowledge and personal insight in real-world contexts.

Our RE curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and encourage enquiry.  We want pupils to ask challenging questions, think critically and express their ideas confidently, whether in discussion, role-play, creative art-based projects or reflective writing.  Lessons are delivered in an engaging and accessible way for all learners, incorporating innovative strategies, hands-on experiences and resources aligned with SACRE guidance to ensure meaningful and ambitious teaching and learning.

Through this holistic approach, RE at Newtown will contribute to the development of well-rounded individuals who are successful learners, able to think independently and solve problems; responsible citizens, capable of contributing positively to society; and resilient individuals, confident in navigating life's challenges with empathy, respect and understanding.

Above all, our aim is to instil in every child a sense of wonder about the world and the people within it, a curiosity to explore beliefs and values and a lifelong commitment to embracing diversity with kindness and open-mindedness.  By nurturing these qualities, we believe that RE can have a transformative impact on our pupils, helping them grow into compassionate, thoughtful and morally aware individuals, ready to engage with the world in all its richness and complexity.
